Celebrating the Inspiring Women of Friends Helping at Home
On International Women’s Day, we took a moment to reflect on some of the incredible women who make up our Friends Helping at Home network. Our head office team is led by inspiring, empowered women who shared their experiences, advice, and reflections on what it means to be a woman in the workplace.
Sam Stuart Hill (Managing Director)
How has being part of Friends Helping at Home empowered you in your career?
“As we build our network at Friends Helping at Home, part of my role is to ensure that our person-centred, pioneering workplace culture runs through like a stick of rock. It has been a fantastic opportunity to shape workplace culture from the start. I feel incredibly empowered to be able to take on this role as a woman wholly shaping a brand’s culture – it is really unique. Now, as I move into my next chapter of being a working mum, I can bring even more to my role to ensure that we are enabling a person-centred approach to a workplace. For me, this means empowering myself and our team to make choices about their workplace, the way they work, and how their working hours fit around their life.”
How do you balance your personal and professional life?
“I ask myself three questions: What do I need? What does my professional self need? What does the business need? I accept that different days require different amounts from each element.”
What advice would you give to younger women starting their careers?
(This is Sam’s favourite piece of advice!)
“Don’t limit yourself. As women, we are often culturally ingrained to think we shouldn’t quite dream that big or shouldn’t quite see ourselves as ‘that’ successful. Be open to learning – never, ever think you know all the answers. Listen to those that have come before you, be open to their teaching and advice… then make it your own! Know where you want to end up, but don’t lock yourself in so much that you miss other opportunities that come your way. Just because we don’t end up exactly where we thought doesn’t mean we have failed. What made us happy in that moment is as valid as what needs to be done to reach a goal.”
Jo Craythorne (Compliance & Quality Director)
What advice would you give to younger women starting their careers?
“Do what you enjoy and what you are passionate about. Follow your dreams and keep talking to people who can help you fulfil those dreams.”
How do you balance your personal and professional life?
“In my personal life, I practice mindfulness each day, spend some time outside in the fresh air, and book my annual leave regularly throughout the year. This helps me to focus and be fully committed to my work.”
How do you think celebrating International Women’s Day makes a difference?
“We are recognising that women can be equal to men and that there doesn’t need to be a divide between the two.”
How does working with a supportive network of women impact your experience?
“It is empowering to work with a network of women who are focused and passionate about their career choices.”
Celebrating Our Empowering Women
We also celebrated International Women’s Day by creating a TikTok video showcasing our amazing service providers – empowering women both inside and outside of their roles as care providers. From their professional dedication to their personal passions, these women inspire us every day.
