A Summer Full of Sunshine, Smiles & Staying Safe
There’s something special about summer.
Longer days, sunshine, colourful gardens, and the chance to spend more time outdoors can do wonders for our wellbeing. Whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea in the garden, taking a gentle stroll around the local park, or simply opening the windows to let in a warm breeze, the little moments can make a big difference.
At Friends Helping at Home, we believe that staying active, connected, and independent is important all year round – and summer brings plenty of opportunities to do just that.

Enjoying the Season
Summer is a wonderful time to reconnect with friends, family, and your local community. Simple activities can bring so much joy, including:
- Visiting a local café or garden centre
- Enjoying an ice cream by the sea
- Having a picnic in the park
- Spending time gardening
- Taking a scenic drive through the countryside
- Sharing a cold drink and a chat with loved ones
It’s often these everyday moments that create the happiest memories.

Staying Safe in the Heat
While sunshine is something many of us look forward to, warmer weather can present extra challenges, particularly for older adults and those with underlying health conditions.
A few simple steps can help you stay comfortable and safe:
☀️ Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
☀️ Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day where possible (typically between 11am and 3pm).
☀️ Keep curtains or blinds closed in sunny rooms to help keep your home cool.
☀️ Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat if you’re heading outdoors.
☀️ Apply sunscreen regularly and seek shade whenever possible.
☀️ Keep rooms well ventilated by opening windows when it’s cooler, particularly during the evening and early morning.
☀️ Look out for signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, headaches, heavy sweating, or feeling unusually tired. If you feel unwell, move somewhere cool, drink plenty of fluids, and seek medical advice if symptoms don’t improve.
Looking Out for One Another
Summer is also a great reminder to check in on neighbours, friends, and relatives. A quick phone call, a visit, or offering to pick up some shopping can make a real difference, especially during periods of very hot weather.
Small acts of kindness can help people stay safe, comfortable, and connected.
